Grades 4-6 Literacy

“I attended your Wonder of Words workshop at the Reading for the Love of It Conference. It was great and I came away with lots of ideas. I’ve attended a few of your workshops in the past and I can’t say enough how helpful they have been for me in developing my language arts program. When I saw you were giving workshops again this year, I just had to go! – KM

Workshops may be extended and combined to suit your time frame, from 60 minutes to full day.  Contact Lori Jamison to customize a program for your professional development needs.

Boogers, Barf and Bloodshed:  Engaging our Boys in Reading and Writing

National and international tests confirm what teachers have known for a long time:  boys are scoring significantly lower than girls in all aspects of literacy.  What can we do to engage our boys in reading and writing? We’ll share the BEAR philosophy of books that boys want to read.  We’ll discuss the importance of choice, active learning and visual supports.  You’ll pick up many suggestions for making your classroom more “boy-friendly” – without losing the girls.

Beyond Running Records:  Literacy Assessments that Inform Instruction

Assessing our students’ reading and writing is one of the biggest challenges we teachers face. And yet, good assessment for learning is essential for guiding our teaching to meet the needs of our students. Lori will share insights that she has gained as a developer of large-scale reading and writing assessments, including the three key decisions that should guide all assessment, and ways that we can help all our students score higher on provincial, state and national tests.
